The interpretation of Sesto by Maria Rebekka Stoehr leads to many highlights of the evening. The best Sesto of my (long) opera life!
His main feature is his ability to endure hardship. Mozart scetched him as lover, friend, traitor, penitent, desperate, and happy. This is almost too much to take, but even more challenging to portray this personality.
The longest arias don't get too long, the timbre matches the part, all movements (hands!) never lessen in intensity.
Every moment, one feels the
gleaming youth - even when clouds darken the sky. Charisma? A hollow word that tries to explain the unexplainable.
